The history of the mourning process in Georgia and the world

Georgians have many customs. These traditions are passed down from generation to generation and are still alive today. One such tradition is the mourning and burial of the dead. Though different in different parts of Georgia, all these rituals have one thing in common - the act of bringing flowers to a funeral. It is an act that shows sorrow and respect.

Since Georgia is a Christian country and its population perceives faith as one of it’s most important priorities, the burial process is carried out according to Orthodox ritual.

Great attention is paid to the spiritual purification of the deceased, which is why family members try their best to observe the rules of the church. One of the most important steps from this is the process of funeral ritual, which is performed by a priest. It happens on a day of rest, in the family or in the church.

The tradition of bringing funeral wreaths and baskets to share grief is not only a common gesture in Georgia. This practice has a long history, which dates back to ancient Egypt.

Of course, depending on culture, religion, and customs, there are different funeral rituals in every country. What is considered acceptable and respectable in Georgia may be considered offensive in another part of the world. One example of this is the rituals of Muslims and Jews where bringing any plant to a funeral is considered an insult to religion, and so forbidden.

Initially, flowers did not have symbolic meaning but a practical significance in the funeral ritual. Initially flowers were used to mask odours from a decaying body. That is why plants with a stronger smell were selected. Over time, flowers changed their role in the mourning process and became means of expressing emotions.

Depending on the culture and religion, flowers have different ideological meanings. Since they carry symbolic meaning, there are rules about which bouquets are acceptable for funerals and which are not.

In ancient Egypt, lotus flowers were associated with rebirth and life after death. It is because of this symbol that lotus flowers were carried to the grave of the deceased in Egypt to provide comfort for the next stage of the soul’s journey.

There are a few rules for creating a funeral bouquet. Our florists know and follow these rules carefully to create the perfect bouquet and let you express grief. There are specific colors and different varieties of flowers that are used for these orders. A few flowers that carry symbolic meaning and are often used:

  • - Lily and magnolia - speaks of the generosity of the deceased;
  • - Chamomile - a symbol of not forgetting;
  • - Field flowers - express gratitude;
  • - Chrysanthemum - yellow color expresses sadness.

You may be wondering why the colors of flowers are so important. According to history, in ancient Greece and Rome, funeral wreaths had not only an emotional but also an aesthetic value. Which means that they were used decoratively in funeral ceremonies. Therefore, choosing flowers themeatically is an important step that needs your attention before bringing the bouquet to the funeral.

Here is a list of the most commonly used colors and their meanings:

  • - Blue - expressing deep sadness;
  • - Red, dark burgundy - a symbol of love;
  • - Yellow - expressing hope;
  • - White - represents purity, beauty, honesty.

If we follow history and remember when symbolism was added to flowers, we need to return to the Victorian era.

In the 19th century, there was a great interest in the idea of flowers, which was called "floriography". It was during this period that flowers took on a new meaning, and people began to actively use them to express complex emotions and sentiments. Days of mourning are a perfect example of this, as people picked out specific flowers, adapted them to new meanings based on their appearance and scent, and added symbolism that became an integral part of the mourning process.

Later, during World War I, the red poppy became a symbol of remembrance. Red poppies were often used to honor dead soldiers and their sacrifice. Since then, we perceive this flower as a symbol of mourning.

Today, offering flowers is a tradition accepted in many cultures around the world. A selection of flowers is used to express specific emotions. Their arrangement is a central part of funeral ceremonies and memorials. However, there is a practice and etiquette in which it is appropriate to send condolence flowers to the home of the afflicted family. Flowers, their color and symbol should be selected according to the family's religion and cultural background.

Funeral bouquets have more than one purpose. In addition to funerals, they are used in many other places: Anniversaries of a death, memorial days, birthdays of the deceased, etc. You will also come across many funeral bouquets at memorials, monuments, arches, etc.

Below is a list and description of how funeral bouquets are made at Lovely Roses.

Vertical Funeral Bouquet

To craft a vertical funeral bouquet, the florist meticulously arranges the flowers in distinct layers. With each subsequent layer, flower heads are gently positioned lower, yielding an elegant bouquet with a pronounced vertical orientation.

This form offers the advantage of displaying all bouquet flowers prominently. Typically, vertical bouquets employ a limited selection of blooms, frequently featuring roses. Despite the modest flower count, this arrangement technique imparts volume and a striking presentation.

Vertical bouquets excel as an affordable means to fashion a captivating and memorable floral display. Though they employ only a select few flower types, the technique detailed above imparts dimension and visual impact.

In such bouquets, a restricted color palette reigns, often incorporating classic shades like white, red, and green. The plant varieties chosen are hardy, designed to endure without water for an extended period. For packaging, dark hues like black or brown are typically employed. The accompanying image provides an illustrative example of such a bouquet.

A Funeral Basket

The most traditional and widely embraced means of expressing condolences, whether in person or from a distance, is through the use of funeral baskets. Our store offers a diverse array of baskets in varying colors and sizes. Within these baskets, we incorporate what is commonly known as "Bioflora" or "oasis," a special sponge full of water. The cut flower stems are inserted into this oasis, and the arrangement is crafted in a way that conceals the presence of the bioflora. Bioflora acts as a substitute for conventional floral foam, ensuring the longevity of the floral display.

One of the key advantages of opting for a funeral basket is its ease of transportation and relocation. It conveniently fits within a car, safeguarding the flowers from any potential damage during delivery.

Additionally, you have the option to adorn the basket with a black ribbon. We can also print your personalized message on special paper, place it inside a Lovely Roses branded envelope, and attach it to the basket handle or a flower stem. Our courier ensures the card's visibility when completing the order, facilitating your heartfelt communication.

Flowers in a round box

Round boxes filled with flowers, commonly used for celebratory occasions, can be transformed into a unique and meaningful funeral arrangement when the right selection is made.

Within our store, you'll find an assortment of round boxes in various sizes and colors. These boxes serve as a vessel for Bioflora, a water-absorbing medium akin to floral foam, enhancing the longevity of the flowers. This longevity sets them apart from traditional bouquets that often wilt quickly at funeral gatherings.

A funeral composition arranged within a round box offers a striking and distinctive way to convey condolences. For a classic choice, we can arrange white roses in a black box, combining elegance with solemnity.

Similar to funeral baskets, a funeral bouquet within a round box is convenient to transport, a notable advantage. While the size and composition may vary, these arrangements are typically prepared efficiently, ensuring a prompt display of sympathy and respect.

A Large Funeral Wreath

They are created on steel legs. It is usually round or oval in shape. With a large number of colors, the circle is completely filled. The flowers are placed in a special bioflora filled with water to keep them alive as long as possible. This makes the crown quite heavy, so it needs an steel rod that can support both the wet bioflora and the flowers themselves.

Such a wreath is very convenient in a ritual hall or during a memorial service. The colors can be varied, but more often white, red and sometimes yellow. A long black ribbon is usually attached to the crown, on which the words of grief and the names of the mourners are written in silver. As a rule, there are many people at the funeral, and sometimes it is difficult to see the grieving family in person. Therefore, by gifting this funeral wreath you send your condolences remotely. This type of arrangement is also quite convenient to place. The photo above shows the second type of crown.

Such compositions are also often ordered by various ministries and state services for important memorial state dates, often ceremoniously placed in front of the monuments.

Delivery in Tbilisi

Our flower delivery service has extensive experience in delivering flowers to churches, ritual halls as well as homes. Couriers are extremely discreet with such orders. Delivery will be done professionally and on time.

Note that sending flowers after a funeral is not an acceptable practice in Georgia as the flowers should not be left at home but delivered to the cemetery. Therefore If the order is late, the recipient will have to deliver these flowers to the cemetery later.
